Microtransactions for useless aesthetic s***? If it keeps the game F2P and lets them pump out more content in the long run, yes please.

That would make much more of an impact than this, which they could have periodically rolled out the month after.

Heh wow, imagine that. Non dartboard buffs that affect more than 5 skills. *Drool*

The thing I am pissed about is that it took these guys so facking long.

Many a PvE char of mine have been deleted due to name/Fugliness etc.

Probably thousands of hours down the drain and much Grind. Tbh I wouldn't mind paying for this to be recovered.

When I heard you have to pay real money to get a makeover etc. I thought it was insane. Most other games have makeover NPC's in-game which can change your look for the price of a few thousand in-game gold. Usually for around 3k. The ideas are brilliant, but paying real money to get the basic things everyone should already have access to, is rediculous. They should add a Makeover NPC in game and charge in-game gold like most MMORPG's with these features.

Even though they probably won't change it, something so simple should be accessed by all, not just the people who have credit cards or who'd spend their earnings all on GW. If it was something like a massive dungeon package or access to more creatures/areas, sure, you should pay if you want those extras, but changing your looks? Please.

I don't know if you're being ironic, but there are ways around that. Xbox Live and Wii Network (whatever it's called) use "points" systems for just that reason. XBL can sell you 400 points for $5, which justifies the card transaction fees, and they can (though do not often, in practice) then put out updates for 50 points ($0.62) or less. Buying 1000 GWPoints for $10 and charging 50 points for one makeover would work just as you describe, leaving you with 950 points left rather than a bunch of makeover credits you'll never use.

They can keep the payment option, just ad another in game option for the people who aren't lazy. If you can buy skills with Balthazar points and in the online store, I see no reason as to why we can't do the same to the cosmetic update.

Charging money for something that doesn't even affect the servers is lame. Don't piss off your fans anymore then you already have.

Oh come on... Has everyone realized that this is a capitalist world for the most part. Anet is like any other company trying to make money and spend money. It takes all of your considerations and use it as money making opportunities.

In addition, taken into perspective why did they put a real price on the storage and makeup? I would like to think that they probably need the funding to support GW2 to go on the market.

And to think if Anet had just not bothered with this update to begin with then no one would be whining about it right now...

All I want is a simple and single feature unlock.

I don't want to pay every time I want to change a character. What I want is to be able to change the appearance of every ascended character anytime without restrictions.

So if they ever decide to make a 'Eternal Stylist' pack or something like that, so you pay once and you can change characters forever, I'll get that, regardless of price.
Otherwise I'll never touch the feature.

I HATE micropayment features. Having to pay each time I want to use the feature is something that I can't stand.
If they don't change that, I won't even think about the feature.

Pay 40€..100€ and change forever? Ok.
Pay 8.99€ to make 1 or 5 changes? NEVER. EVER. In my life..

IMO there should be a stylist that would take GP as payment. My thoughts are that this game needs more moneysinks. This would help fix the economy if the prices for the actions were correct. Plus I think there is something wrong with making people pay money for things they shouldn't have to. Making basic character changes (not name) should have been something that was included to begin with. It's not like they had to add hairstyles.

For example
Hair Dye = 100 GP
Hair style change = 1K
Skin color change = 10K
Face change = 50K
Gender Change = 100K

It was really bothering me last night when I was playing around with the preview functions and the only one I really wanted to change was my nec's hairstyle, but I sure as hell didn't like the idea of throwing $10 for it. Not when I'm fine with everyone else looking the way they are currently.

If people want to have another option for this feature, Anet needs to get right on it.

Nice update and the feature to mix and match character appearances from all 3 campaigns was a surprise. While I agree that a payment should exist (as the devs worked for it) I find the prices a bit excessive and badly thought.

Was looking at the prices (in euros currency)

Character Name change: 12.99 euros.
For 5 uses Makeover without gender change: 8.99 euros.
for 1 use extreme makeover: 8.99 euros.

So I have a paragon I don't like, would love to make it female and change his name. Partially my fault for not choosing well, however mistakes happen.

So I made the total sum for complete gender, appearance name change: 21.98 euros for 1 CHARACTER.

I agree on mithran's proposal. I won't bother buying anything at those prices, I can spend them in a much more useful way.

Keep in mind the game in general has remained free for everyone after they have purchased whatever expansion, etc. While they do need to fund the work they do, and so must find some way to generate income, it would seem to me that the ONLY things reasonable to charge actual real world money for would BE aesthetics. It seems there are a lot of folks out there who are ignorant about how much money goes into keeping this game live and running. On the other hand, its pretty lame when the only way to get some kind of in game edge or advantage is to pay money. The makeover pack gives someone a chance to have something that sets their character apart and marks them as someone who's spent a little extra money on the game, without creating a situation where someone feels extorted into paying real money just to keep up with the current skill or ability edge.

I'm sure I'll have plenty of people who will disagree, but keep game affecting upgrades free, and extra like this, charge for all you want. I'm sure there are fools out there who would spend 9 bucks for a small advantage, but most thinking human beings would rather not, lol.

One little thing before I go off again - title should be "What SHOULD be done about the makeover", because it's not like the game will collapse on itself if nothing happens. But anyway...

As I've said before, I really, really, really don't like this new format. It's stupid, it's expensive, I've got tons of better ways of spending my money, and I don't like how they've chosen to charge us for something so minor. I know ANet needs to make money, but going all MapleStory on us isn't going to do it. And I'm not even sure how much they need these particular sales. I'm willing to bet, from the crowd around the stylist when I checked yesterday morning, that maybe a fifth, a quarter of the population will buy this. I'm not really sure. Most people just won't care... I hope. But that's another story. Anyway, that's $10 per person for a one-time thing... I doubt more than a small fraction of those people will be repeat customers on that, because most people are just fixing a couple things, or so it seems, and then they'll leave their charas alone. What bugs me is all these people going "Oh well you don't want ANet to go broke do you?" when AT THE SAME TIME the news is coming out that sales have hit 6 million. It's not like they're not still selling games. Heck, you just need to look in the Q&A to see all the threads of "Is this game any good" that end in "Hey, I went out and bought the trilogy since it was only $30," or all the "Okay, so I bought the game, now what" threads. And those are just the ones who came to us. Nor does everyone have all the games - my friend whom I've just introduced to the game is contemplating getting another campaign, and my guildie Kity finally completed her collection just this past week. They're still selling tons of games - on one of the other "we're angry" threads someone had the statistics, and they were impressive for a 4-year-old game. So maybe ANet's not so strapped for cash.

Oh, and technically Amazon's selling preorders for GW2 for like 50 bucks, though I don't know who would buy them when we haven't seen anything new for that game since 2007.

So I guess I'm in the boat with the IGG people... Winterclaw's model looked good to me. I'd been ready to sink 5-10k on a new 'do, but I ain't wasting my cash.

@ Qing: Post very well thought, I agree with it.

I know at least 2 ppl that started the game a month or two ago and they already have 2 campaigns. With those current prices on the makeovers, Anet will be more at a loss than gain here.

This statement is Fallacious. I paid good money for each and every chapter and to support anet at the time i bought every single chapter as collectors editions. Anet merely doesn't charge a monthy fee. That doesn't mean the games "Free". If it were I could just dl it and play it with no money spent. That is not the case.

Move Along.

Wait till its a buck to log in a character and 25c every time you do a character swap... then they can add another fee for when you want to loot/pick up a good item that dropped.

"7 ectos are on the ground for you to loot, would you like to loot these ectos? please enter your cc number or paypal info here...total cost 7$".

When a game company has a publisher they work out a deal with the publisher to fund the creation of a game. It's why game companies go to publishers.

Now maybe they should have made these not so micro transactions into true micro transactions.

ALL storage panes for 9$
Unlimited Makeovers 9$
1 Extreme Makeover + 1 Name Change 9$

Package Deal All of the above 20$
